For the most part, Bay area production duo Friendzone’s Kuchibiru Network 2 mixtape forefronts instrumentals by the sort of producers usually found in parentheses on Main Attrakionz releases. In addition to the tape’s creators, who produced the immortal Perfume-sampling cut “Perfect Skies,” Kuchibiru includes increasingly familiar M.A. alumni like Marlee B, Julian Wass, Silky Johnson and Ryan Hemsworth. Friendzone’s pulled together reworkings of Japanese producers Uyama Hiroto and Konyaga Tanaka, the jerkin artist Icez and tracks by Skywlkr, whose beats are more often associated with Danny Brown. It’s a totally stuffed, cohesive compilation, showcasing the best new minds behind an infinitely describable style of production—melodic, cloudy-skied but optimistic, cherry blossom-tinted beats and raps best absorbed in a lying down position.
