▲▲▲FRIENDZONE gives us a track off of their upcoming KUCHIBIRU NETWORK 3, slated for 2.26.13. ”Moments Pt. 2” picks up where part one left off, bringing listeners to the place part one promised us.
The first installment was a softly treading piano ballad that naturally stagnates and gives listeners poise (not to say that this original calm was bothersome, just that the original energy was appeasing rather than unnerving). Part two moves from traditional instruments to synthetic renditions of their sounds. Obviously, the production duo didn’t simply distort their first version and call it a day. They only retain the melodious waves of part one in order to create a coherent sequel. Their work was in flipping the energy from stand-still to dispatching.
By including a flute riff that makes a few guest appearances, and voices that play back and forth together under (and eventually over) sharp snares, FRIENDZONE breaks the stagnation of part one. Now, their characters have a voice. Now, they have footsteps pushing them forward. Now, they have a goal. As the various tempos on the track increase, we follow voices that become more coherent and audible as we move forward. We get closer to the narrators and eventually end with their voices in perfect clarity.
When I interviewed .L.W.H., he noted the importance that FRIENDZONE places on the “atmosphere” of a track. Works like this one demonstrate precisely that, in my mind. They build an entirely new “place” for listeners with only slight contributions from a few new instruments.
