▲▲▲The FRIENDZONE duo continues to ignore our pleas for the release of DX, with yet another single (which may be on DX). “4 YIA YIA” is an instrumental set to the cadence of a lonely cuckold, leaving person-shaped dry patches outside a lovers window on a rainy night. This static observer watches as their life is stolen away by a replacement, unable to hear anything but their own distress.
A loop with no intro or outro, FRIENDZONE throws us directly into our protagonist’s scrape. Once again attacking our heartstrings, they focus their musical efforts on the drift of glottal hums, resonating the loud sounds that seem to be audible to those around us, but grumble only in our heads. Our teeth grinding, whispers of hatred at passersby, choked advances. The small touches of sound that often go unnoticed but reflect the treadmill we run everyday. The almost-spoken hum (that takes place in the character’s head) is an indecipherable monologue on the pain of solitude.
With sounds that rarely overlap on this track, FRIENDZONE design a cohesive set of sounds that seem to emanate from the same source. This is the loneliness. This is the reach of a person whose impotent voice affects no others, no reflections or responses are given. The only semblance of overlap comes in the form of a deflating drum loop, occasionally enervated by inexcusable snares. And although a flute accompanies rising pitches in our character’s head, these serve only to isolate this sound, acting like the rumble of pain the character feels.
FRIENDZONE’s instrumentals are some of the few that weave clear story lines with thoughtful personification, calibrating sounds to focus a perspective.
