"Wanna" is the first single off of Green Percussion, the 7-track instrumental tape odyssey, from Green Ova’s .L.W.H. & Uptown Greg, due to be released in late September. Under the monicker “Percussion Boyz Ent.”, .L.W.H. and Greg collaborate to bring listeners a track whose density alone suggests an expansive range they’re about to dig out of their work together. .L.W.H. and Uptown Greg have similar tastes in the vocalists they choose to work with, we’ll see how how this translates into an instrumental collaboration.
But from the sounds of “Wanna”, the Percussion Boyz may thrive off of the seeming incoherence between sounds. Human, hopeful, moving slowly enough to display its different facets, but fast enough to create friction, "Wanna" tumbles through a concussion of sound. A pleading vocalist repeats, with short breaths, “Wanna…”, to hoots egging him on, keyed flutes lifting these chants above wispy hi-hats. A bass settles over the whole scene, dragging a static blanket over drums shouldering their ways out of the cocoon. Then, suctioning [pause] the sounds through the static overlord pushes them against one another, panicking the sounds within, who spit out slight inconsistencies to break the wall. And then, all of a sudden, gyrating trumpets whistle into smiling drums, exuberant about their release from captivity.
